The Connecticut General Assembly has added provisions to Conn. Gen. Stat. § 10-220a requiring that each local or regional board of education provide in-service training programs to its teachers, administrators and pupil personnel on teen dating violence and domestic violence. Each local and regional board of education may also permit any paraprofessional or noncertified employee to participate voluntarily in the in-service training program. The amendment is applicable starting with the school year commencing July 1, 2010.
The legislation also directs the State Board of Education, within available appropriations and utilizing available materials, to assist and encourage local and regional boards of education to include teen dating violence and domestic violence as part of in-service training programs. The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) has created a website addressing teen dating violence, which includes a fact sheet, resources, data and a webinar to assist districts in meeting the requirements of this legislation. The CSDE website is available here, and is offered as a resource to support local school districts in addressing teen dating violence and in promoting healthy relationships.
