In an effort to assist educational institutions in the area of privacy, security and confidentiality of student records, the U.S. Department of Education has established the Privacy Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) which has published a number of documents on its website of interest to public school districts. In particular, PTAC has made available a sample checklist for responses to data breaches, as well as FAQ on the use of cloud computing to store student information. These documents are available at and may be useful for districts contemplating use of cloud computing and other online storage of student information.
